Chinese Super League take measures to stop insane transfer fees

China's football association has announced a series of measures in response to "irrational" spending by clubs on transfer fees and player salaries, amid concerns that foreign stars are crowding out local talent and harming the country's goal of becoming a global force in world football.

The CFA said it would also be taking action to curb the "recent appearance of irrational investments and the payment of high transfer fees and salaries for domestic and foreign footballers".

Chinese Super League clubs' player recruitment plans for the coming season were thrown into disarray on Monday morning as the Chinese Football Association confirmed last week's reports it would limit the number of foreign players permitted to play in the 2017 season.

Tevez became the highest paid player in world football when he left Boca Juniors for Shanghai Shenhua, reportedly earning over £32 million a year in wages alone.

The two were the latest in a stream of foreign players flowing into China in recent years in return for eye-watering sums.

The soccer watchdog also said that teams should have two Chinese U23 players in their 18-member lineup, and should field at least one of them.

Clubs would still be able to register five foreign players in their overall squad, the CFA said, but the rule would mean not all could be used in any one game, a potential disincentive to loading a squad with global imports. The Asian player quota has been abolished under the new regulations.

"The CFA will continue to release new rules and policies to regulate the irrational expense of the Chinese Super League and the China League, including the overpaying of domestic and worldwide transfer fees and salaries in order to professionalise clubs' operations and management", said the statement. That could stifle the government's attempts to produce talent capable of achieving its stated goal of winning the World Cup by 2050, part of Chinese President Xi Jinping's push to make soccer success a national priority.
