Aldine Middle School Teacher Impregnated by Student Sentenced to Prison

A Houston area teacher has been sentenced to 10 years in prison after she was impregnated by a 13-year-old student, according to the Houston Chronicle.

Prosecutors said the boy's parents didn't object to their relationship and Vera told an investigator they were "very supportive and excited" when she disclosed her pregnancy.

Vera, an eighth-grade teacher at Stovall Middle School in Houston, was arrested in June and initially charged with continuous sexual assault of a child, which carries a maximum of life imprisonment. She and the 13-year-old reportedly began their relationship after exchanging messages on social media such as Instagram and Snapchat before sharing phone numbers.

Out on $100,000 bond, Vera had been ordered to stay away from schools and kids before Judge Michael McSpadden sentenced her to prison Friday.

Vera will be eligible for parole after five years.

"If I was Alex, I'd be counting my blessings", she said.

Vera told police that she first met the student during a summer school session. Her sentence was capped at 30 years after she pleaded guilty.

Vera said the student's parents not only knew about the relationship, they approved of it and allowed the teen to spend the night at Vera's home in Spring, where they engaged in sex on a regular basis, according to court documents.

Vera drove the boy around in her vehicle and they kissed, and the next day she went to his home when his parents were out and they had sex for the first time, she told police.

Karen Lawson, a therapist testifying for Vera, said she thinks Vera "was driven by being in love" with the boy. Alexandria Vera, 24, who was a teacher at an Aldine Independent School District middle school near Houston, had pleaded guilty to aggravated sexual assault of a child in November.

The boy's mother was in court Monday in support of Vera and her relationship with her son, even asking the judge to show leniency.

As for the victim in this case, he is now in foster care.
