Donald Trump sworn in as 45th president of the United States

Every decision on trade, on taxes, on immigration, on foreign affairs will be made to benefit American workers and American families.

We have to wonder if the president appreciates the full meaning of his own words.

Everyone erupted in cheers on the other side of the convention center as Trump stopped first at the "Liberty Ball" - where all three balls the new president said he'll attend are being held.

He promised he'd make America strong, safe, and great again.

A precursor to this newspaper, the Chicago Sun, was founded for the express goal of countering the darker inclinations of those who cry America First. Most of Mr Trump's supporters know this, and are prepared to wait a while. His mix of naivete and bravado is potentially risky.

Inauguration Day went off with the precision associated with the peaceful transition of power in the United States.

Our nation is too immersed in the global economy to throw up walls of protection.

"We're going to do things that haven't been done for our country for many, many decades", he said. His parade was thin and behind schedule, and the growing anti-Trump protests in the city stole some of his thunder as they set trash on fire and disrupted a town not know for handling crowds well. In his 16-minute inaugural address, he offered them not a word of compassion.

Vowing to "get the job done", President Trump took office Friday outlining a drastically different agenda than that of his predecessor and moving to install key members of his national security team - as he began the work of turning his bold, and often brash, campaign promises into action. Some protesters were more expressive - demanding Trump's removal from office, smashing shop and vehicle windows, torching things in the streets and tangling with pepper-spraying policemen.

Police deployed pepper spray in a chaotic confrontation blocks from Donald Trump's inauguration Friday as protesters registered their rage against the incoming president.

It's the start of what will be an administration that could be doing all this pomp and partying all over again four years from now. And, above all, he played up small-minded nationalism, that rolling up of the drawbridge.

Among Trump's first actions, aides say, will be a freeze on USA government hiring, suspension of climate-change regulations, suspension of immigration from countries associated with Islamic extremism, withdrawal from a trans-Pacific trade agreement Obama negotiated, lifting of restrictions on coal mining and oil drilling, and a halt to federal funding for US "sanctuary cities" that refuse to arrest immigrants living in the country illegally.

He also said the U.S. would be "committed to a foreign policy focused on American interests and American national security", vowing to pursue "joint and coalition military operations" to defeat so-called Islamic State and other radical Islamic terror groups.

A larger problem with the speech was Trump's failure to reach out in more than a perfunctory way to the millions of Americans who not only didn't support him but also were offended and even alarmed by his comments about immigrants and racial minorities.

Some of what the president said was appealing. Borrowing from the mumbling warlord from The Dark Knight Rises as he says: "Today's ceremony, however, has a very special meaning because today we are not merely transferring power from one administration to another or from one party to another, but we are transferring power from Washington, D.C., and giving it back to you, the people". Chicago would love it.
