HP Inc recalls 101000 laptop batteries before they halt and catch fire

In the United States, the company has received 8 reports of the battery overheating, catching fire or melting, with no reports of injuries.

Affected devices include HP, Compaq, HP ProBook, HP Envy, Compaq Presario and HP Pavilion laptops purchased from March 2013 to October 2016.

The CPSC said a possible overheating of the batteries could cause "fire and burn hazards". They were also sold online at both HP.com and other online retailers.

The new recall is an extension of an earlier announcement in June, which covered over 40,000 batteries. HP will provide a free replacement battery to anyone in possession of a unit bearing the telltale bar code.

It should be noted that if your battery was one of those deemed not affected in the June 2016 recall, that might have changed so you should double check.

The recall, detailed by the US Consumer Product Safety Commission, covers lithium ion units compatible with HP, Compaq, HP ProBook, HP ENVY, Compaq Presario and HP Pavilion systems sold between March 2013 and October of previous year through Best Buy, Walmart, Costco, Sam's Club and HP's site.

"The battery bar code is printed on the back of the battery".

The batteries were also sold separately for between $50 and $90.

The CPSC recommends that consumers remove the batteries from affected devices and contact HP for a free replacement. The barcodes affected in this expanded recall all start with 6BZLU, 6CGFK, 6CGFQ, 6CZMB, 6DEMA, 6DEMH, 6DGAL and 6EBVA.

Those who need replacement batteries can call HP at 1-888-202-4320 or go to the company's website for the recall to see if their notebook is affected. The US Consumer Product Safety Division advisory states that the batteries in question were manufacturered by Panasonic in China. Fortunately, because the batteries are removable, users can still plug in their power adapter to the laptop and continue using their machines.

Users can easily check if their battery is eligible for recall.
