Drunken Bus Driver Briefly Strands Billikens Basketball Team in NY

But from a New York State Police statement on Thursday, we learned why the bus driver chose to jet off early.

She was driving for the Lockport-based Grand Tours & Ridge Road Express bus lines, a company employee confirmed Thursday.

They say it's best not to linger over a loss, but the Saint Louis men's basketball team had no choice.

While authorities searched for the bus, the players sat in the arena.

Thanks to the fact that Saint Louis Coach Travis Ford was able to track the location of his iPad, which had remained on the bus, police eventually found the driver about 40 miles west of Olean in Randolph, N.Y. The driver who had taken the team to the arena, Linda Edmister, was given a sobriety test on the side of the road and registered a blood alcohol level of 0.22, well above the legal limit in NY.

Saint Louis' first season under new coach Travis Ford has not gone well.

Edmister, of Gasport, New York, registered a 0.22 blood alcohol content, which is more than five times above the legal limit of 0.04 for New York drivers with commercial licenses. She does not have any prior arrests, O'Callaghan said.

Edmister, was charged with driving a commercial vehicle while intoxicated.

It couldn't be learned whether Edmister has a lawyer who could comment on the accusations.

As for the team, it later posted an update on Twitter thanking the St. Bonaventure staff for helping out. He said troopers don't know exactly when she left the campus or why.

After they retrieved their belongings from the original bus, the Billikens boarded a new bus with a new driver and headed off to the airport, arriving just after midnight.

New York State Police Trooper James O'Callaghan said he didn't think Edmister was drunk when she drove the team to the game.
