A major winter storm is roiling the morning commute in NYC

Some major carriers, including JetBlue, have canceled almost all flights to and from Boston. The winter storm warning will stay in effect until 8 p.m. Thursday.

The storm should be gone by midday and the sun could even shine Thursday afternoon as crews work to clear snow from roads and sidewalks.

A blizzard warning was in effect for parts of Long Island, while a winter storm warning was issued for New York City, parts of Hudson Valley, Connecticut and New Jersey.

The snow is expected to hit Boston by 6 a.m., Baker said. According to USA Today, flights on American, Southwest, Delta, United have been scrubbed, and almost 60 percent of JetBlue's entire Thursday flights have been cancelled. Click through the gallery to see more photos from this winter storm.

Storm Niko is now raging in the Northeast and Aer Lingus confirmed this morning that it would affect flights to several major U.S. cities. Many people reported thunder snow across the state - which, while possible during heavy snowfall, is a rare occurrence.

As of 10 a.m., 12 flights departing from New Orleans to destinations in the Northeast were canceled, according to online flight-tracking service FlightAware.

Thursday's storm is expected to be the first major snow to hit metropolitan NY in 2017.

Public schools in New York City and much of New Jersey are closed.

The storm has affected several major freeways along the northeast corridor - including Interstates 68, 70, 76, 78, 80, 81, 83, 84 and 95.

Anyone planning to travel on Thursday or Friday is advised to check with their airline for delays or cancelations.

Walsh said he feels the city is ready for the storm, but it's hard to fully predict the extent of the hazards. Most of those cancellations, 2,713, were for Thursday flights.
