Kenya doctors jailed over strike

Kenyan Justice Hellen Wasilwa addresses medical union officials, during their case to demand fulfilment of a 2013 agreement that would raise their pay and improve working conditions.

Doctors in public hospitals have been on strike since December 5 over pay and conditions.

Odinga said he was "horrified, disturbed and shocked" at the sentencing and said it marked "the lowest point that Jubilee's intransigence, incompetence and inability to lead has brought the nation to".

Kenya medical students protest in solidarity with a doctor's strike on January 19, 2017 in the capital Nairobi.br / Thousands of Kenyan public sector doctors are now engaged in the country's longest-ever medical strike which has dragged on for the last month and a half, demanding a tripling of salaries and better working conditions. She had camped out for two days next to her frail father, who was sleeping on a worn-out mattress in a corridor as she tried to gather money for an operation on his ruptured bladder.

Seven doctors leading a strike of public sector medical professionals were hauled off to jail as talks collapsed to end a four year running labor dispute.

For now, union officials have called off all communications with President Uhuru Kenyatta's government until their jailed leaders are released.

"This court declines to review its order sentencing the applicants to one month jail term. you can now start serving your sentences, those are the orders of the court", Wasilwa said.

The union, which has about 5,000 members, wants the government to implement a deal agreed in 2013.

The government has already linked several deaths by those too poor to pay for health care to the strike.

"The doctors have expressed their aspirations". "We are disappointed. We have suspended all negotiations", said Thuranira Kaugiria, a union official. "The government needs to make an offer that would be acceptable until that happens", he said. "That means all the doctors in Kenya have been jailed", they said.

The male officials will serve their 30-day sentence at the Industrial Area prison while their female counterparts will do their time at the Langata female prison.
