Sensex retreats for 2nd day, tanks 184 points

The benchmark index of Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE) today declined by 12.31 points to end negative at 28,339.31 on profit booking by local operators.

Meanwhile, the broad based NSE Nifty fell by 67.60 or 0.77% at 8,724.70 with 40 components posting drop.

Globally, Hong Kong's Hang Seng was up 0.61 per cent, Shanghai's Composite index rose 0.45 per cent, while Japan's Nikkei gained 0.54 per cent in their early trade. On the NSE, 12 shares closed in the green, while 38 shares ended the day in the red and one remained unchanged.

Major losser was Tata Motors slumped 10.32 per cent with the stock extending yesterday's 3.68 per cent fall triggered by the company's weak Q3 December 2016 results. The BSE Small-Cap index provisionally dropped 1.52 per cent.

Shares of the automaker fell as much as 8.5 percent to Rs 440, for the fifth day in a row after the company's net profit for the October-December quarter declined a whopping 90 percent.




The US Dow Jones ended up 0.5 per cent yesterday.

It was followed by Tata Steel 2.57 per cent, Adani Ports 2.09 per cent, Hero Motoco 1.99 per cent, ICICI Bank 1.49 per cent, Maruti 1.32 per cent, Dr reddy 1.27 per cent, NTPC 1.08 per cent and Bharti Artl 0.99 per cent.

Top gainers in the Sensex-30 pack: ITC (up 1 per cent), TCS (up 0.5 per cent), HDFC Bank (up 0.5 per cent), Bajaj Auto (up 0.4 per cent) and Asian Paints (up 0.3 per cent). The index fell as much as 2 percent to 21,487.

The volume chart was led by Jaiprakash Associates with trades of over 7.60 million shares.
