Princess Cristina of Spain Found Not Guilty of Tax Fraud

However, Princess Cristina was ordered to pay a fine of $282,000 because she had benefited from her husband's wrongdoing.

There were 16 other defendants in what became known as the NĂ³os case that began in 2010, including former government minister Jaume Matas, sentenced to almost four years, and Diego Torres, Urdangarin's former business partner, sentenced to over eight years.

Her husband Inaki Urdangarin had been charged with the more serious crimes of embezzlement, influence peddling, forgery and money laundering. Torres was given an eight-and-a-half year sentence. Back in 2015, King Felipe stripped his sister of her title, the Duchess of Palma de Mallorca. As the scandal unfolded, Former King Juan Carlos' decision to abdicate the throne in 2014 was seen as an effort to allow his son Felipe to restore the monarchy's credibility.

The Spanish royal family has been under scrutiny in recent years for its lavish lifestyle while much of the rest of the country was undergoing economic hardship.

"No one is above the law", said a spokesman of Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy's conservative government on Friday.

The institute organized conferences and sports-related events and was run by Urdangarin and a partner, Diego Torres. Among the companies used by the institute to hide funds was Aizoon, a real estate consulting company jointly owned by Cristina and Urdangarin that paid for family holidays and wine bills, according to court documents.

The princess is happy to be cleared but disappointed in the sentence for her husband, whom she has always believed to be innocent, her lawyer, Miquel Roca, told reporters in televised comments.

"We must acquit and we are acquitting Cristina Federica. of tax fraud, of which she was accused", the court said.

She was accused of using company funds for personal expenses such as clothes and dance lessons for her and Urdangarin's children, as well as for work on their home in Barcelona and then passing that off as business expenses.

Spaniards had been waiting for the judges' verdict since the trial ended in mid-2016.
