5G is coming in 2017 as Verizon announces test program

RIDGEFIELD PARK, N.J. -(BUSINESS WIRE)-Samsung Electronics America, Inc.and Verizon today announced they have completed deployment of 5G systems in five USA cities in preparation to begin customer trials of 5G technology.

These markets include Ann Arbor, Atlanta, Bernardsville, Brockton, Dallas, Denver, Houston, Miami, Sacramento, Seattle, and Washington, DC.

Verizon will offer pilot service of the broadband 5G network to select customers in the various areas where testing will take place, according to a press release issued by the company.

Verizon isn't alone in its wireless efforts, as AT&T recently announced trials for its AirGig 5G service as well.

"5G technology innovation is rapidly evolving. the time is right to deliver the next generation of broadband services with 5G", Adam Koeppe, Vice President, Network Planning at Verizon, said in the statement. Also, as Cheng wrote, there is no set specification for 5G available, so Verizon could be hoping to impact how that specification continues to develop.

5G enable devices are now being manufactured according to the release along with chipsets and infrastructure products. In its announcement, the company says it is closely working with its Technical Forum partners Qualcomm, Intel, Ericsson, and Samsung, as well as peers in the telecommunications industry in Canada, Japan, and South Korea, to work toward a global standard.

Verizon will begin tests during the first half of this year.

The move is another step by Verizon toward making its 5G service market-ready.

The FCC in July adopted new rules for wireless spectrum above 24 GHz - in the millimeter-wave band - that it said were aimed at enabling "rapid development and deployment of next-generation 5G technologies and services".
