Gov. Brownback follows through on tax increase veto

Brownback has vowed not to sign the bill, which would impose income tax increases that would raise more than $1 billion over two years.

"I'm not supporting the governor", Denning said on the Senate floor.

Michigan Governor Rick Snyder has pushed back against a legislative move to phase out the state's income tax by 2057.

The state faces projected budget shortfalls totaling almost $1.1 billion through June 2019.

Kansas has struggled to balance the budget since GOP lawmakers slashed personal income taxes in 2012 and 2013 at Brownback's urging.

Although this bill goes a long way towards repairing Kansas fiscal structure, Gov. Brownback has condemned the bill as "a big step backwards".

"While I respect the determination with which Governor Fallin met her obligation to present a balanced budget to the legislature, I can not support her proposed tax increases", Lamb, who remains lieutenant governor, said in a statement. Even some Republicans concluded that Brownback's tax-cutting experiment had been a bust as an economic stimulus, and voters ousted two dozen Brownback allies from the Legislature, giving Democrats and GOP moderates more power. He's long touted the 2012 and 2013 tax cuts as pro-growth policies that are models for other states and the federal government.

Some top Republicans lawmakers have said the governor's proposals collectively don't represent a permanent budget fix.

Kansas lawmakers failed to override Gov. Sam Brownback's veto of bill increasing income taxes to balance budget. The Senate's GOP leaders outlined a package to boost income taxes but also cut aid to public schools, dropping it when support for reducing education funding collapsed. Rob Olson, a conservative Olathe Republican who opposed the bill. Period", says Baumgardner. "How that, you know... the final version of that, well, we have one version in a tax bill that got a veto override on the House side.
