Jazz Reach Out To Mavs On Trading For Deron Williams

As Dallas returned to practice on Wednesday, it was without center Andrew Bogut and point guard Deron Williams. Among qualifiers, Williams ranks 10th in the National Basketball Association in assists per game. He holds career averages of 16.6 points and 8.2 assists and has been selected to three All-Star teams. He helped Utah advance to the 2007 Western Conference Finals, but the Jazz were eventually eliminated in four games against the powerhouse San Antonio Spurs.

Both Bogut and Williams have been considered to be on the trade block with the latter being most recently linked to the Utah Jazz.

The argument with Deron Williams went too far and that led to Jerry Sloan's abrupt retirement in the middle of the 2011 season, via a report from CBS Sports. Ferrell averaged 15.3 points per game and 4.6 assists, leading the Mavs to five wins in seven games as a starter.

Williams signed a one-year deal with the Mavericks back in July, receiving a no-trade clause as part of the contract from the team.

"Williams can't be traded without consent, thanks to his one-year, $9 million deal with the Mavericks after playing the previous season in Dallas, because they 32-year-old would have to forfeit his free-agent bird rights if dealt to another team". At 22-34 on the season, this makes ideal sense.

The Jazz are seeking depth at the point guard position to back up George Hill, who has missed 25 games to injuries. It might not take a lot to get him from the Dallas Mavericks, as Utah could likely get away with just offering a future first-round draft pick.

The Jazz will return to action after the All-Star break Friday night on the road against the Milwaukee Bucks.
