Mobile deploying LTE-U on its network

And just yesterday, Nokia and Ericsson were given permission to start deploying LTE-U devices, something T-Mobile has been quick to take advantage of.

The debate also roped in consumer advocates and the city of NY, which sent a letter to the FCC and global standards authorities saying LTE-U threatened the city's network of free Wi-Fi hot spots. The move, T-Mobile said, will enable the carrier to bring its forthcoming Gigabit LTE service to more markets across the country down the line.

T-Mobile indicated it has been conducting field trials of LTE-U technology since December, but the journey to get even there was a long one. The news comes after a recent FCC ruling certifying LTE-U base stations from Ericsson and Nokia earlier this week.

In order to take advantage of the speed boost from LTE-U, however, customers will need a compatible device - of which there aren't any now on the market. It also promises to give way to Wi-Fi as the need arises. "As demand on the Wi-Fi network increases, LTE-U backs off, and as Wi-Fi demand wanes, customers can tap into that unused capacity for LTE". As with its predecessor, LTE-U lets consumers connect to the internet from nearly anywhere they have cell service.

Short for LTE-Unlicensed, LTE-U is a variant of the 4G LTE that millions of Americans rely on every day. "And voluntary industry testing has demonstrated that both these devices and Wi-Fi operations can co-exist in the 5 GHz band". Both companies had their equipment certified by the FCC on February 2.

T-Mobile US CEO John Legere. "The use of this technology will bring an even better customer experience while using LTE".

The FCC said yesterday that it had authorized some LTE-U devices for use in unlicensed portions of the 5 GHz band. According to Ars Technica, LTE-U has been proved to work without affecting the users of conventional Wi-Fi, as the technology constantly seeks the least utilized channels in order to maximize performance and efficiency for everyone.

There's no telling when iPhones will support the LTE-U band.
