Police sharpshooter accidentally opens fire during French President Hollande's speech, two injured

A police sharpshooter accidentally shot two people while French President Francois Hollande was delivering a speech Tuesday.

Mr Hollande was speaking at the opening of a high speed rail service between Tours and Bordeaux when the shot was sacked.

The BBC cited a local report noting that the safety catch on the sniper's gun was unlocked and the firearm discharged.

A loud noise like a gunshot is heard on video footage of the president's speech.

Only one bullet was reportedly fired, which brushed one person's calf before hitting another person in the leg.

"The sniper was on high ground when the shot went off accidentally", Pierre N'Gahane, state prefect of the Charente region, told reporters. He then paused for several seconds to take stock of the situation. Their injuries are not life threatening.

Although it has been confirmed that two people were injured as a result, there are conflicting reports as to whom.

A judicial investigation has been launched into the accident.
