Spotify Will Take on TIDAL With Hi-Fi Music Tier

The pricing test offered users an upgrade to high-quality audio for between $5 and $10 more per month than the usual $10-a-month Spotify Premium. The $19.99 price point for lossless audio mirrors the tariff asked for Tidal Hi-Fi.

Spotify, the world's largest music subscription service, today announced a major milestone: 50 million paid subscribers. It remains to be seen how much Spotify will actually charge when Hi-Fi does launch, but it's clear that the Swedish firm is throwing the gauntlet down to competitors like Tidal.

Spotify is preparing to launch a lossless audio version of its streaming service, according to multiple sources. Both SoundCloud and Amazon are now experimenting with lower-price options that offer less content or less functionality, and there are rumours Spotify is also considering what a £5 a month package might look like, in addition to possibly launching premium premium.

The move, if implemented right might find Spotify finally able to lure CD and physical media holdouts over to its streaming service. Spotify has to focus on other ways to bring added value and differentiate itself from its biggest competitor by adopting new features and capabilities.

Regardless, a Spotify spokesperson refused to shed any light on the matter, telling The Verge, "We are always testing new products and offers but have no news to share at this time". The publication reports that the new tier was rolled out to a small group of users yesterday (February 28).

Keep your eyes peeled for a new Hi-Fi offering from Spotify coming, hopefully, soon.
