Inheritance at heart of missing French family probe

The sister and brother-in-law of Frenchman Pascal Troadec who has been missing along with his wife and two children since mid-February were remanded in custody on Sunday, sources close to the case said.

There is still the possibility that some of them are alive, officials say.

His DNA can be said to possess been discovered at their house.

With police attention focusing on the son, who had a previous conviction for making death threats on his blog, attentions suddenly turned to Pascal's sister and her husband, who were arrested over the weekend.

But police detained the pair on Sunday after Hubert C's DNA was found on a glass in the Troadec home and Sebastien's vehicle, recovered last Thursday in a auto park.

The pair were detained in Brest, Brittany, the region the Troadecs came from and where several personal items belonging to them have been found.

A social security card and pair of pants belonging to Charlotte were found earlier in a forested area near Brest.

The role of Lydie Troadec - Hubert C's ex-wife and Pascal's sister - was not yet clear, reports said.

RTL reported that it is not yet known whether Hubert C has told police where he left their bodies.

The prosecutor in the western town of Nantes said at a news conference that Hubert Caouissin told investigators he slipped into the home of the Troadec family at night last month with the intention of retrieving a key, but found himself face to face with his brother-in-law, who the suspect said was holding a crowbar.

The bloodstains of the parents as well as Sebastien were found in the family home, though Charlotte's were not.

Officers also discovered traces of Sebastien's and his parents' blood, but not Charlotte's.
