Change your clocks and smoke alarm batteries for Daylight Savings Time

Daylight Savings Time kicks in on Saturday night, and rather than being upset about that hour you lose when you set your clocks forward, the Red Cross wants to recommend a safer, smarter way to spend your time.

The American Red Cross is reminding folks that when you change your clocks you should also check the batteries in your smoke detectors. When the battery runs low, the smoke alarm will start chirping to let you know, he said, and you should call the fire department at 985-1805 to come take a look at it.

More than 95 percent of USA homes have at least one smoke detector installed inside them, but most homeowners remain unaware of the different kinds of sensors available and their effectiveness, reports the U.S National Fire Protection Association. Meanwhile, roughly two-thirds of all home fire deaths result from fires in homes with no smoke alarms or non-working smoke alarms.

For all you Facebook users in North Alabama, the Scottsboro Fire Department has a challenge for you.

The reason they need to be replaced is that the smoke sensors lose sensitivity over time, according to Consumer Reports. In this case, continue to test the battery monthly and replace the entire unit after 10 years. Experts also say you should periodically clean smoke alarms using a vacuum attachment.

People can visit redcross.org/homefires to find out more about how to protect themselves and their loved homes from fire. "So, I encourage residents to test their alarms before changing the battery".

Ten-year smoke alarms require little maintenance, and unlike alarms with removable batteries, they are almost impossible to deactivate, however they must be tested monthly.

Vacuum your smoke alarms every month.

Install smoke alarms. At a minimum, put one on every level of the home, inside bedrooms and outside sleeping areas. Remember, every family should have an EDITH (Exit Drills In The Home) plan.

And if you don't have smoke alarms, no problem. The program launched in November 2012 and is a grant-funded smoke alarm distribution program.
