Gideon Sam: No one is to blame for loss of Commonwealth Games

Durban presented a revised budget and hosting proposal to the Commonwealth Games Federation over the weekend but the last-ditch effort to save Africa's first worldwide multi-sport event wasn't enough.

Durban's lost its hosting rights after failing to meet its financial obligations.

When rumours about Durban's ability to host the Games first emerged, the city of Liverpool said it would be willing to take over.

However, a review conducted by the Commonwealth Games Federation (CGF) found a "significant departure from the undertakings provided in Durban's bid".

"The CGF is fully confident and committed to delivering a successful Commonwealth Games for athletes and fans in 2022", its president Louise Martin said.

Only last month sports minister Fikile Mbalula appeared to pre-empt the withdrawal revealing that the government had failed to come to an agreement with the Commonwealth Games Federation over bankrolling the event.

Durban was the only city to launch a formal bid to host the Games after Edmonton in Canada withdrew.

The 2018 Commonwealth Games are set to be held in Gold Coast, Australia.

A statement from the CGF explained the rationale for its decision.

The Federation released a statement a short while ago saying that - having completed its review of the final information submitted by South Africa on 30 November past year, it was discovered that a number of key obligations and commitments in areas had not been met.

Gideon Sam, president of the South African Olympic committee, told Reuters: "This is a huge disappointment for us and for the whole African continent but without the necessary government guarantees, we couldn't move on". We remain committed to the inspiring potential of a Games in the continent.

Liverpool has an expressed an interest in staging the event. It is already bidding to host the games in 2026.

"Besides, it would have made it increasingly hard for another potential host city if we had delayed the process any further", said Sam.
