Merkel flies in for Trump meeting flanked by German CEOs

In a press briefing by White House press secretary, Sean Spicer Friday, he said: "There's a lot of excitement on both sides of the ocean for this trip".

President Trump and German Chancellor Angela Merkel have pushed back their Tuesday meeting to Friday because of an expected snowstorm. In January, Trump himself suggested to Germany's largest newspaper that a tariff on BMW imports could be in order.

Trump's criticism of Germany over issues ranging from its record trade surplus tos Merkel's liberal refugee stance, as well as his backing for Britain to leave the European Union, has been the issue of tussle.

Angela Merkel is headed to Washington to meet with President Trump.

Her government has been alarmed by calls from the White House for a rebalancing of trade with Germany, which sells €48.5 billion more to the USA each year than American exporters send in the other direction.

Mr. Alexander says the move fuelled "anxiety about migration" throughout Europe and helped sow the seeds of Brexit and the election of U.S. President Donald J. Trump.

The two leaders have been critical of each other's policies in the past, particularly immigration-related decisions. Trump vowed during his campaign to withdraw from the climate agreement, suggesting that global warming is a hoax created by the Chinese to hurt USA competitiveness. Also, the two leaders are expected to discuss Germany's level of defence spending for the North Atlantic Treaty Organisation alliance. But the administration said it is still formulating its policy on the issue ahead of the G7 meeting in Italy in May and the G20 gathering in Germany in July.
