Step Aside Soda!… Bottled Water is King of the Land

After decades of strong growth, bottled water has surpassed soda as the largest beverage category in the USA, according to a recent report by research and consulting firm Beverage Marketing Corporation.

-Is water America's new favorite beverage? Bottled-water consumption reached 39.3 gallons per capita, while carbonated soft drinks were at 38.5 gallons.

The report comes after another industry tracker, Beverage Digest, in February projected that bottled water volume consumption would surpass carbonated soft drinks in 2017.

In a latest report, bottled water became the largest beverage category by volume in 2016 in the US, surpassing sodas. Beverage Digest noted that carbonated soft-drink dollar sales and profit margins are still greater than those of bottled waters, "much of which is sold in bulk multi-packs in the grocery channel". Bottled water consumption dipped in 2008 and 2009, but has grown consistently from 1977 to 2016.

So while the excessive use of plastic may be worrisome for the environment, the growing popularity of bottled water illustrates a trend toward healthier lifestyle choices. "Where once it would have been unimaginable to see Americans walking down the street carrying plastic bottles of water, or driving around with them in their cars' cup holders, now that's the norm", he added.

A milestone for bottled water in the U.S. After the Flint, Mich., water contamination and treatment crisis, only 1 in 3 Americans were willing to drink water straight from the tap, as the Monitor reported in March 2016.

The data on bottled water includes carbonated, unsweetened water and probably the boxed water products popular with some celebrities, and the soda category does not include carbonated energy drinks. In other words, Bellas was speaking to the long tradition of drinking clean, free tap water.
