Patriots RFA Malcolm Butler plans to visit Saints on Thursday

According to ESPN's Adam Schefter, the Saints and Patriots still could consider a trade later on for Butler.

Butler is currently a restricted free agent and has a first-round tender placed on him by the Patriots, which for now, he hasn't signed. The Saints wanted Malcolm Butler, but because he hasn't signed his franchise tender he's not technically under contract and therefore can not be traded.

Let Butler sign with the Saints for a first round pick. Butler earned his first pro bowl in 2015 and had a great year this past season with 4 interceptions. Cooks expressed frustration last week about his role with the team, and now he'll have none.

New Orleans has both of its 2016 season-opening starters at cornerback on the roster in Delvin Breaux and P.J. A visit with cornerback Malcolm Butler could end up being a match made in heaven, but the price may end up being a bit too step for the Saints to pay.

The Patriots remain favored to win Super Bowl LII following their blockbuster trade with the Saints for receiver Brandin Cooks. He specified that the reason the Saints explored trades for Cooks was because they were hoping to add resources to help improve their defense.

The 23-year-old receiver has finished the previous two seasons with over 1,000 receiving yards. However, if New Orleans is offering what he wants and the Patriots are O.K. with making a deal to send him there, it's possible Butler could sign the tender, which would allow New England to deal him.

As of right now, the Texans are only willing to give up their second round pick.

Gilmore signed a $65 million on the first day of free agency, worth approximately $14 million per season.

Meanwhile, as the process has gone on, it's been mentioned how much Butler has to lose if he takes the field in 2017 and suffers an injury that would end his earning potential.

Of course, there will be a point at which the Patriots and Saints will need to do some winking and nodding, so that the planets can properly align once Butler has signed the tender.

Bill Belichick's New England Patriots and Sean Payton's New Orleans Saints have grown well-acquainted with each other over the years.
