Massachusetts girl badly burned by homemade slime

"It felt like really hot and tingly", Kathleen says.

An 11-year-old MA girl is recovering from second and third degree burns from a popular do-it-yourself slime project, according to a report from CNN and WCVB.

The girl was at a sleepover the weekend of March 18 when she woke up in agonizing pain.

Siobhan Quinn didn't stop her daughter, Kathleen, from making homemade slime from a popular DIY recipe.

But her doctor confirmed that Kathleen's prolonged exposure to the finished product is what caused her skin to blister. And Kathleen's mother said she hopes her daughter's situation would prompt others to take precautions when making the goo themselves. She was rushed to the hospital where doctors diagnosed her blistered hands with second- and third-degree burns.

Borax, a detergent and household cleaner, consists of sodium tetraborate, a mineral used in a number of household products.

Michaels has installed "Slime Headquarters" on aisle endcaps, with displays sporting glue and slime mix-ins like beads and glitter, according to the Associated Press. I told her we should wait a bit.

It is also one of the main ingredients in multiple recipes for homemade slime or "gak" found online.

Deejay's chemical burns got her a referral to a plastic surgeon, her mother said.

But Quinn, mother to 11-year-old Kathleen, didn't realize that such an innocent and educational project could do so much harm.

This week, an expert at Consumer Reports warned parents to be cautious while handling Borax. "Glitter slime, clear slime, sequin slime, glow-in-the-dark slime, puffy slime, and metallic slime are just a few of the gooey concoctions to surprise us, all of which use Elmer's glue as a key ingredient".
