Chicago Police union president meets with Trump, Sessions on Tuesday morning

The national FOP president, Kenneth "Chuck" Canterbury, Jr., told reporters the union supports the Trump administration plan - announced by Sessions on Monday - to strip Justice Department funding from sanctuary cities and counties - including Chicago and Cook County.

There were more than 760 homicides in Chicago last year, the most in 20 years.

Trump's reassurances clashed with Sessions' announcement, when he said, "The Department of Justice will require jurisdictions seeking or applying for department grants to certify compliance" with federal immigration law "as a condition for receiving these awards".

Trump thanked the police union and its president, Dean Angelo, for their support during his election campaign and bragged about the backing he'd gotten from police officers.

The president pointed to the example of Chicago, where almost 700 people have been shot so far this year.

"We're removing MS-13, we're removing criminals all over the country, we're taking them out", he said. In January, Trump tweeted a message threatening to "send in the feds" if the city didn't fix the "horrible carnage going on". Almost 700 more have already been shot since January of this year, alone.

"To see that you're like, 'Wow, ' they really listened to what we said and they're trying to put it in place", said Mr. Johnson. The meeting included Vice President Mike Pence and Attorney General Jeff Sessions.

The White House meeting comes at a critical time for Chicago police. "I will always have your back 100 percent", Trump said. The spokesman also declined to comment on Pasco's account of the meeting. "Find out who they are, please, and let us know".

Angelo says one point he and other union leaders made to the President was that if Trump follows through on his threat to withhold federal crime-fighting money from cities like Chicago that offer sanctuary to illegal immigrants, it could hurt Chicago Police.
