Ford Recalls 440K Vehicles For Fire Risk, Door Latch Trouble

Taken together, the two new recalls will cost Ford about $295 million, spokeswoman Elizabeth Weigandt said in an email.

About 208,584 of the affected vehicles are in the USA and federalized territories, 21,854 are in Canada and 318 are in Mexico.

The engines can overheat, causing a crack in the cylinder head, according to Ford. But 29 cases of fires have been reported. The automaker says the cars are fine to drive, but to watch out for coolant leaks and monitor coolant levels.

In North America, the engine fire recall includes the 2014 Escape SUV, the 2014 and 2015 compact Fiesta ST, the 2013 and 2014 Fusion midsize auto, and the 2013 through 2015 Transit Connection small van. Ford said continued operation of those vehicles could result in fractured tranmissions or driveline components, which could cause power loss while driving or unintended moving while parked.

Company officials are identifying a "lack of coolant circulation" as the culprit with those models. To fix the issue, dealerships will add a coolant level sensor. It will mail customers instructions on how to check and refill coolant.

Auto industry giant Ford has issued safety recalls for almost half a million vehicles.

The company also is adding 211,000 vehicles to a 2015 recall to replace faulty door latches. The recall affects the 2014 Ford Fiesta, the 2013-2014 Ford Fusion and the 2013-2014 Lincoln MKZ.

The company recalled more than 2.3 million vehicles last fall because their door latches weren't working properly.

Ford said the cost of the recalls were included in its updated earnings guidance issued last week.

In October, NHTSA opened a preliminary investigation into 440,000 Ford 2011-2013 Edge SUVs over door latch warning light issues.

In the latest recall a pawl in the door latch can break, either stopping the doors from closing or causing them to open while the cars are being driven. In September, Ford said it was taking a $640 million charge for its expanded side-door latch recalls.

Ford isn't aware of any accidents or injuries in the three other recalls.
