Xbox One gets Beam streaming, a new guide and more starting today

This month's Xbox One update is a biggie.

"The first page of the Guide is created to get you to the content you care about most, including your Games and Apps, Home, Store, your recently launched applications, the latest Games and Deals with Gold for Xbox Live Gold members, and your top Pins", said Microsoft in an announcement.

Microsoft definitely had multitasking in mind when putting together the new Xbox One update, adding: "In addition to adding a new start page to Guide, we're also evolving the way gamers multitask on Xbox One".

Ybarra confirmed the news on majornelson.com, where he also discussed what the update would bring to the system. This is part of the ongoing evolution of the platform back to being primarily a gaming device, though at the Xbox One's outset it was positioned more as a media hub for all types of content.

First lets start with the user interface updates, and in particular the new Guide.

And starting today, it's apparently complete and is available to anyone with an Xbox One console.

The other big addition is the new streaming options added through Beam, something that has been teased for a while by Microsoft. To do that, we've optimized for speed and are prioritizing the most valuable content for your games.

Improved multitasking. Microsoft isn't really talking up this aspect of the Creators Update, but it has removed the Snap feature from the Dashboard, so you can no longer display two apps side-by-side. And as with all previously Dashboard updates, Microsoft claims it has made various performance improvements, though I think most of the improvements are really related to UI efficiencies.

Chief amongst them is giving players the ability to stream to Microsoft's streaming service straight from the guide.

Finally, Microsoft is enabling parents to gain more control over screen time with new settings that can limit it, while there are also new accessibility options. Set daily time allowance and limits for each child-your Xbox One will pick those limits up and enforce them whenever the child is signed in.

The Xbox One's Blu-ray player now supports bitstream passthrough, which allows your receiver to decode audio natively.
