Ex punk-rocker O'Rourke launches longshot bid against Cruz

"It's very likely that I will run for Senate in 2018", O'Rourke told the Texas Tribune earlier this year. He plans to make the announcement in his hometown of El Paso.

O'Rourke would be the first Democrat to declare against Cruz, who has served as the Lone Star State's conservative senator since 2012. He has toured the state in recent weeks, talking about his prospective Senate campaign in terms that made it sound like he has already reached a decision.

A Castro bid is no sure thing; he has a rising profile in Congress, he's on the leadership track in the House of Representatives and he's deeply involved in the investigations into whether Russian Federation interfered with the 2016 elections. Will Hurd (R-San Antonio) said he plans to run against Cruz for his senate seat. In the 2014 primaries, about 28,000 voters turned out in El Paso County, while nearly 42,000 cast ballots in Castro's home turf of Bexar County. Both O'Rourke, 44, and Castro, 42, are in their third terms in the House.

Another Texas House Democrat, Rep. Joaquin Castro, has been considering a run against Cruz and is expected to make a decision sometime in April.

While the young representative from El Paso unseated a long-serving fellow Democrat in 2012 (Rep. Sylvester Reyes), his anti-gun positions and other liberal leanings would make him a very unlikely to unseat a popular Republican senator who finished in second place in a field of 17 major candidates, the largest ever US presidential primary race.

O'Rourke grabbed national headlines earlier in March when he took a bipartisan road trip across the USA with Representative Will Hurd (R-TX) after a winter storm in the East Coast grounded flights to DC.

O'Rourke said he speaks to Castro daily.

O'Rourke - a fluent Spanish speaker who lives on the border and says that it is the safest and best place to be - would offer a stark contrast to the politics of Cruz and Trump. Before he began working in Washington, he served as a member of the El Paso City Council from 2005-2011.
