Tim Lammers reviews 'Ghost in the Shell' and 'The Boss Baby'

The film is based on a hugely complex comic book series which spawned any number of TV series and animated movies of its own, including the critically acclaimed 1995 feature length Ghost In The Shell from Production IG - high standards, perhaps impossibly high to satisfy franchise fans.

It begins with the "birth" of The Major, a human (Scarlett Johansson) plucked from the wreckage of a crash and souped up as a cyber-enhanced soldier, dedicated to serve as a soldier fighting unsafe criminals. She wasn't turned into this soldier because she was about to die; she was about to die because somebody wanted to turn her into a soldier.

Johansson, 32, showed off her sartorial game once again at the New York City premiere of her sci-fi drama on Wednesday. But the film is so engrossing to see, the mediocrity of the narrative is not a deal killer.

But other critics felt that in order to "translate the tone for a modern audience", fundamental elements should not have been overlooked.

The publication backed its criticism by pointing out that although director Rupert Sanders and his production team "demonstrate a real appreciation for Masamune Shirow's original manga and the adaptations and spinoffs that followed it", the film "fails to treat race and cultural identity as realities". He's even got a lead on The Major herself.
