Cowboys' Romo retiring, replacing Simms at CBS

While Romo conceded the starting job in 2016, the quarterback was expected to land with an new organization either by trade or as a free agent. However, after battling injuries the last several seasons and being supplanted by Dak Prescott in Dallas, Romo has chose to hang 'em up and pursue a new career.

Romo has three seasons left on his contract with the Cowboys, but he's been supplanted by Dak Prescott as the starter.

CBS is expected to formally announce the addition of Romo to its broadcasting team later Tuesday, per Schefter. Not exactly, according to a follow-up report from ESPN's Adam Schefter.

Dak Prescott, the Cowboys' second fourth-round pick previous year, took over for Romo last season won a franchise-record 11 straight games.

USA TODAY's Tom Pelissero reported last month that Jones said his deadline for a decision on Romo was training camp.

Tony Romo is trading in his #9 jersey for a spot in the broadcast booth. His 34,183 passing yards, 248 touchdowns and 97.1 passer rating rank first in team history.

The decision appears to have come down to his health.

Of course, Romo's retirement could become more of a respite from playing football if the Cowboys or another team develop a need unexpectedly.

Momentum built behind trade talks when the Houston Texans, thought to be one of the primary suitors for Romo's talents, traded Brock Osweiler to the Cleveland Browns.

Romo has been with the Cowboys since going undrafted in 2003 out of Eastern Illinois.

Romo, who turns 37 in April, has only played five games over the past two seasons due to collarbone and back injuries.

Romo also holds team records for most 300-yard passing games (46), multiple touchdown pass games (79) and consecutive games with a touchdown pass (38).

So now we will see if John Elway was bluffing with his carefully worded statements to the media or if he truly has moved on from Romo and is happy with his current two young quarterbacks.
