US Special Operations Soldier Killed in Afghanistan

The soldier was a special forces operator helping Afghan forces battle ISIS militants and was killed in the Achin district of Nangarhar province.

"A US soldier was killed in action while conducting operations against ISIS-Khorasan in Afghanistan", US Navy Captain Bill Salvin said, referring to a provincial affiliate of the jihadist group.

An American soldier supporting Operation Freedom's Sentinel in Afghanistan was killed in action in the eastern part of that country on April 8, a US official announced.

The soldier's name hasn't been announced and no other information has been released.

A U.S. soldier was killed while conducting operations against Islamic State in Afghanistan late on Saturday, a USA military spokesman said in a message posted on Twitter.

The service member was not identified as the Pentagon notifies his next-of-kin.

This comes as at least three U.S. soldiers were wounded in an explosion in Jalalabad city, the provincial capital of eastern Nangarhar province last month.

The U.S still has some 8,400 troops in Afghanistan.

Since then, Afghan forces have led most counter-terrorism operation across the country.

The mission's spokesman, U.S. Capt. Bill Salvin, said since January 1, U.S. forces have carried out some 460 strikes in support of the Afghan National Security Forces (ANSF), and in March alone, 79 strikes killed more than 200 fighters.

Last month three American troops have sustained injuries when an Afghan soldier opened fire on them in the southern province of Helmand, the first known "insider attack" on worldwide forces this year.

In a news conference last week, Salvin said the goal of the USA counterterror mission in Afghanistan for 2017 was to eliminate the remaining Islamic State-affiliated pockets. US officials have said the movement has about 700 fighters but Afghan officials have put that number at about 1,500.
