Taiwan Is First Country in Asia to Ban Eating Cats and Dogs

Although the consumption of dog and cat meat is rare in Taiwan, the move is symbolically significant, according to the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals in Hong Kong.

The bill passed in the house also increased the penalty for killing or abusing animals, hiking the jail term to a minimum of two years and a strict fine of Tw$2 million.

Taiwan's legislature passed a legal amendment on Tuesday banning the consumption of cat and dog meat. In addition to the fine, they could face public criticism - as their names and photographs could be published by media outlets.

Taiwan has become the first country in Asia to ban the slaughter of cats of dogs for human consumption.

Australia's Yahoo 7 News reported that the legislative change makes Taiwan the first Asian country to enact such a ban.

Taiwan has banned the selling and eating of cats and dogs after a series of cruelty cases that caused widespread outrage.

The revised Animal Protection Act imposes hefty fine of up to Taiwan $250,000 (£6,500) for anyone found breaching the new law.




More and more, dogs and cats are seen as pets; Taiwan President Tsai Ing-wen frequently posed with her two cats during her 2016 presidential campaign, and she has adopted three dogs since her election.

Finally, the law outlaws people leashing a pet and "walking" them from a auto or motorcycle, CNN reported.

The island now has some of the most comprehensive protections for animals anywhere in Asia.

A year ago a lamb meat restaurant was found serving dog meat to customers just to curtail the cost.

China has always been criticized for its annual dog meat festival in Yulin, southern China, where 10,000 dogs are slaughtered and served as meals. During the annual festival 10,000 dogs are killed and prepared for meals, CNN reported.

Of these, 81 were government officials with other formal jobs who worked only part-time for the council on various task forces, including animal quarantine, pet shop inspections and public shelter administrative work.
