Harrison, Villa score; NYCFC beats winless Union 2-0

Instead of playing it back to a teammate, though, he went for the spectacular, lobbing 2016 MLS Goalkeeper of the Year Andre Blake from well over 50 yards to ice a hard-fought NYCFC win (watch above).

The effort - an exquisite strike from a bouncing ball that looped high over Blake and into the net - was similar to one that Villa attempted against the same opponents last season, only to see the ball hit the crossbar. On Friday, he helped his side beat the Philadelphia Union with one of the best goals of his career.

"I was a bit exhausted from running so I simply tried it and it went in", said the 35-year old. Only Villa could be too exhausted to run up the field and decide to score from the halfway line.

"It was among the more challenging within my profession, for sure!"

Jack Harrison hit the other NY goal of the night, as the Union remain without a win since the start of 2017.

Jack Harrison had opened the scoring for City, whose win was sealed thanks to Villa's goal.

The Frenchman said: "When I realised that the ball was in the back of the net, it was fantastic". It was a great game for us we played so well, better than the last game.

The Major League Soccer season just started, but I think we have our goal of the year.

With the victory, NYC FC picked up three points and moved to 3-1-2 on the season, tying the Columbus Crew SC at the top of the Eastern Conference with 10 points apiece.
