Pence to visit mosque in Indonesian capital

"Being aboard the USS Ronald Reagan, seeing these extraordinary soldiers, sailors, and Marines gives me great confidence that the United States' presence in the region is strong and under President Trump's leadership will be stronger still", Pence said. "All of America is proud of you", the vice president said.

CNN's Dana Bash reported from on board the USS Ronald Reagan, while CNN's Joshua Berlinger reported and wrote from Hong Kong.

Pence, his wife Karen and two daughters walked inside the main hall of colorful Senso-ji temple Tuesday as incense burned.

"I think the path of negotiations with North Korea has been a colossal failure now for more than 25 years", Pence told the Washington Post.

The vice president is on the second stop of a 10-day visit to the Asia-Pacific region after visiting South Korea, where he toured the demilitarized zone (DMZ), the heavily fortified border between North and South Korea.

But economic policy advisers traveling with Pence reportedly said the trip is also aimed at reassuring Washington's allies that the current administration wants to boost trade in the Asia Pacific region particularly after the USA withdrawal from the Trans-Pacific Partnership agreement.

"The vice president is well aware that the US needs to do more in the wake of walking away from the TPP to message USA economic staying power", Sumpter explained.

Another top agenda on Pence's trip was pitching Trump's economic policies.

"North Korea would do well not to test his resolve - or the strength of the armed forces of the United States in this region", he further remarked. Pence was joined by American softball star Monica Abbott and Japanese player Akinori Iwamura.

Vice President Mike Pence on Wednesday promised North Korea that the US military would make an "overwhelming and effective" response to any use of conventional or nuclear weapons. Pence has been working with Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe to discuss options for stopping nuclear proliferation in the area.

Vice President Mike Pence avoided a direct answer when asked if the USA used any cyber or electronic technology to sabotage Sunday's North Korean missile test.

Pence told the service members they are, "the best of us, heroes all".

"But at every step of the way, North Korea answered with overtures of willful deception, with broken promises and nuclear and missile tests", Pence said.

Pence told business leaders before leaving Seoul that the Trump.

There, Pence will be meeting Indonesian President Joko Widodo and Vice President Jusuf Kalla, as well as celebrating the 50th anniversary of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) and the 40th anniversary of US ties with the group.

The focus of his trip is expected to shift in Japan to trade.

White House officials say the meetings in Tokyo are meant to forge a framework for future discussions after the US withdrew from a Pacific Rim trade pact.
