Unemployment rates fall to record lows in 4 states

Colorado's unemployment rate dropped to 2.6 percent in March, making it the lowest in the country, the Colorado Department of Labor and Employment reported Friday.

The Indiana Department of Workforce Development says the state lost 1,500 private sector jobs last month, though private sector employment has grown by more than 39,000 over the past year.

There were job losses in Information (-100), Financial Activities (-100), Construction (-200), Professional & Business Services (-200), Educational & Business Services (-300), and Trade, Transportation, & Utilities (-400).

Locally, the unemployment rate in Sumter fell from 5.5 in February to 4.9 percent in March, and down from 6.0 percent in March 2016.

Overall, nonfarm payroll jobs increased by 16,600 since March previous year. The labor force consists of employed residents and those who are unemployed and actively looking for jobs.

The unemployment rate, Gov. Terry McAuliffe said, is the lowest it has been since May 2008 and is below the national rate.

The U.S. earlier this month reported 4.5% unemployment in March compared with 4.7% in February.

This brings the number of unemployed workers to its lowest level since May 2007.The labor force decreased 0.1 percent over-the-month and declined by 0.6 percent in March over the prior year.

St. Johns County's unemployment rate of 3.3 percent was lower than every county but Monroe County at 2.8 percent. The rate was 5.6% in March 2016. Putnam's rate was tied for the fifth-highest in the state, but it was nearly a full percentage point lower than the previous year.

Over the year, claims were down by 2,963, or 10.6 percent, from 27,982 in March 2016, with administrative and support services and manufacturing and construction accounting for most of the decline. "Not only has unemployment decreased, but private sector employment has skyrocketed to an all time high for our great state". The new total for that month now stands at 14,000 jobs, up 2,600 from the original estimate of 11,400 jobs. "Our focus is on implementing a 2-year budget that reduces the overall tax burden on all Mainers and continues to promote this type of job growth". Other metrics also showed falling unemployment in the Pine Tree State. MA was at 3.6 percent and Rhode Island was 4.3 percent. Denair's rate also was unchanged at 5.3 percent in March.
