Trump tweets don't help: First Twitter revenue drop since IPO

Twitter added 9 million monthly active users in the first quarter of this year, shattering Wall Street estimates and helping to send the stock up as much as 11% in premarket trading Wednesday.

The site reported monthly active users had risen to 328 million, up from 319 million in the last quarter, and a 6% increase on this time previous year, while the platform's recently established live video streaming service also reported 31% more interaction this quarter, with 45 million unique views across more than 800 hours of live video.

In its latest quarterly report, Twitter said that it generated nearly $548 million in revenue, managing to earn 11 cents to a share.

Twitter Inc. (NYSE: TWTR) shares jump on Wednesday after the company reported monthly active user growth that beat analysts' estimate.

As the company seeks to turn things around, it's focused on the DAU metric as a way to show the current users are more engaged as it roles out more live video products and other features created to keep people coming back more often.

Twitter recently released its quarterly report and contrary to expectations from most financial pundits, the company has actually managed to register an increase in various aspects. That said, management also spent lots of time talking about the company's newer focus around live video.

Twitter also said daily active users rose 14 per cent in the first quarter from a year ago.

For the first quarter, Twitter reported revenue of $548 million - down 8% year-over-year.

But Twitter says it was a result of changes it has made to the way it displays a user's timeline, such as showing tweets a user may have missed, instead of displaying them chronologically.

User numbers are up, losses are down, but Twitter can't yet make its advertising service work, and that's a problem.

According to the struggling company, it gained 9 million users in the first quarter of 2017, growing by 3% from 319 million users to 328 million.

But this quarter, analysts are predicting that even Twitter's revenue could take a hit. "We believe usage will drive meaningful revenue and profit growth in the next few years".

Twitter plans to use its new momentum, combined with better ad pricing and improved returns on investment, to convince marketers to spend more.
