Chicago Bears trade up, take QB Trubisky with No. 2 pick

This comes as a shock to just about everyone.

North Carolina's Mitch Trubisky reacts after being selected by the Chicago Bears during the first round of the 2017 NFL football draft, Thursday, April 27, 2017, in Philadelphia.

The 6-foot-2, 222-pound Trubisky ranked fifth in the country with a 68.0 completion percentage, threw 30 touchdowns against just six picks, and averaged 288 passing yards per game.

When it comes to developing Trubisky, who started only one full season for North Carolina, Pace said he does not plan to have a timeline for Trubisky's development.

Trubisky has been considered the top quarterback in the draft and was reportedly coveted by the Cleveland Browns, the most quarterback-hungry team in the league. But experience is something he is lacking.

The Bears signed former Tampa Bay Bucs starting quarterback Mike Glennon in the offseason, which may mean Trubisky will have time to develop as a backup.

Trubisky told ESPN after his selection that he had no idea the swap was happening and that he did not get a call to alert him to his selection.

The Bears gave the San Francisco 49ers the No. 3 pick and a pick next year.

It's a pick that the Bears also need to hit on in a big way, given the mixed results with Pace's first two first-rounders. Thomas has been projected as a left defensive end in coordinator Robert Saleh's 4-3 defensive scheme with the versatility to move to the three-technique defensive tackle spot in passing situations.

In the end, the Bears, lacking a long-term solution at quarterback, were the team that coveted Trubisky most. And for years to come.
