CBI arrests Mumbai IT Commissioner, 6 others on alleged corruption charges

Those arrested include B.B. Rajendra Prasad, an Indian Revenue Service officer of 1992 batch and now Income Tax Commissioner (Appeals-30) in Mumbai; Pradip Mittal, Managing Director of Essar Group of Companies; and Vipin Bajpai, an accounts officer in the company headquartered in Mumbai.

The CBI also nabbed four others including Pradeep Mital, a senior officer of Essar company, the firm's accounts officer, its chartered accountant and the real-estate agent's relative.

The CBI said Prasad had recently passed an order in an appeal matter favouring a private trust, Balaji Trust, of the Essar Group.

After investigation, CBI caught the Commissioner who had received part of the bribe amount of Rs 19.34 lakh (approx) from the Real Estate Trade Agent.

Once the favourable orders were issued, the Commissioner asked Suresh Jain, a bullion and real estate dealer based in Visakhapatanam who works as middleman for the Commissioner, to get in touch with Choksi and arrange the agreed illegal payment, the FIR alleged. It said on Monday Prasad contacted Jain and asked him to hand over part of the amount he had received on his behalf.

In yet another instance of cracking down on corruption in high places, the Central government arrested a high-ranking income tax official in Mumbai on Wednesday and recovered cash from him.

Several property documents along with details of bank accounts, three lockers and other incriminating documents were also recovered during the searches. A source told CBI that the amount was likely to be delivered to Prasad on Tuesday at his Visakhapatnam residence.

The accused will be produced before a designated court later, officials said.

On April 27, Mittal then directed Bajpai to deliver the first instalment to the CA, CBI said.

The trust said its executives are cooperating with the investigation and would continue to do so.
