Bafana Bafana re-appoint Baxter

Baxter was appointed to lead South African club SuperSport United in January 2016 and will remain with them until the end of the current campaign, before taking up his duties with the national association.

This season, SuperSport went 19 matches unbeaten in the Premier Soccer League and are still to play the South African Cup semi-finals and the CAF Confederation Cup group phase.

The Bafana Bafana will travel to Nigeria in June for the 2019 AFCON qualifier against the Super Eagles of Nigeria in Uyo, Akwa Ibom State.

"If there is a chance of Stuart going from one venue to another then maybe he can, but that is something we need to discuss with Safa, a worst-case scenario is that we would send a team with (assistant coach) Kaitano Tembo", added Matthews. "So we're glad this matter is now settled and we can all focus on the job at hand which is meeting our football targets for this season and planning ahead for next season".

The Scot, who is now head coach at PSL side SuperSport United, previously held the reins between 2004 and 2005, but quit after South Africa failed to reach the 2006 World Cup.

Stuart Baxter's appointment to the South African national side has been greeted with a mixed reaction but many believe his experience in local football will bring him success. "We thank SuperSport United for their support towards the goals of the Association and its national teams", said Safa CEO Dennis Mumble.

Baxter joined SuperSport United in January a year ago and led Matsatsantsa to a top-eight finish.

Under the veteran tactician, the club won the Nedbank Cup and are now in the semi-finals of this season's competition where they face Chippa United seeking to defend the crown. This season SuperSport reached the Telkom Cup Final and will face Chippa United in the Nedbank Cup semifinal on May 20.
