Neymar ordered to stand trial for corruption

Spanish prosecutors now agree they have a case and are seeking a two-year prison sentence and a fine of almost €10 million for Neymar.

The 25-year-old striker - whose full name is Neymar da Silva Santos Junior - has been accused of helping to hide the true transfer fee of his move from Santos to Barcelona in June 2013.

This sum corresponds to the amount being claimed by Brazilian investment fund DIS, which owned a portion of Neymar's economic rights before his 2013 transfer to the Camp Nou.

Neymar has been accused of helping to hide the true transfer fee of his move from Santos to Barcelona in June 2013. They accuse Barcelona, Santos and the Neymar family of concealing the real transfer fee.

Barca fought off interest from a number of clubs across Europe to secure Neymar's signature in 2013, for a fee originally thought to be around £49million.

Neymar is not the first Barcelona player to get into trouble with the Spanish authorities.

They are also seeking a five-year sentence for former club president Sandro Rosell, who resigned over the scandal in 2014. DIS received only 6.8 million euros ($NZ10.8m).

The decision to order Neymar to stand trial is another blow to the image of the Spanish giants and the player himself. Last year, superstar Lionel Messi was handed a 21-month suspended sentence for tax fraud. Fellow Argentinean Javier Mascherano agreed a one-year suspended sentence with authorities for tax fraud earlier this year.

Neymar signed a bumper new deal with the club to extend his contract until 2021 in July 2016 despite admitting he held talks with Paris Saint-Germain amidst interest from a host of top European clubs in luring him away.
