Pentagon to Pitch Revised Afghan War Plan to Trump Next Week

She said that the proposal will be sent to President Trump and the goal to do is to move beyond the stalement and recognize Afghanistan as important partner to US.

Theresa Whelan, who is now working as the Pentagon's assistant defense secretary for special operations, told senators the new plan likely will go to the White House next week. The plan will likely include a request for more USA troops.

The announcement comes amid expectations of a request for thousands of more troops to break a stalemate with Taliban insurgents.

"We want to maintain that partnership with Afghanistan and we want to ensure that Afghanistan reaches its potential, so that's the objective of the strategy", she added.

At the time, he declined to share what those recommendations were.

The Pentagon is also weighing a plan to deploy an unspecified number of Special Operations troops supposedly to escalate ground operations against al-Qaeda and Daesh (ISIL) militants.

Thomas, who recently returned from a visit to the country, said while the situation on the ground remains at a standstill, USA officials need to recognize that the military has so far accomplished its mission of preventing another attack emanating from Afghanistan.

Those additional troops would allow U.S. advisers to work with Afghan army units at the brigade level, bringing the Afghan mission more in line with how United States advisers operate in Iraq.

There are about 8,400 United States troops in Afghanistan.

North Atlantic Treaty Organisation officially ended its combat operations against the Taliban at the end of 2014, and its current mission is to support Afghan troops in training and advice.

About 2,000 USA service members participate in a counter-terrorism missions aimed at targeting groups like Al-Qaeda and ISIS. Current and former US officials said discussions revolve around adding three to five thousand troops.
