Gross 50-foot carcass washes up on beach

A giant "squid-like" creature has washed up on the coast of an Indonesia island leaving locals baffled.

The discovery was reportedly made by 37-year-old Asrul Tuanakota, a resident on the island who first thought the carcass was some kind of boat.

In the initial report, the creature is said to be a giant squid, and notes that local government is being asked to deal with its remains.

Initial speculation had assumed it may be a giant squid, but those assumptions have mostly been dismissed.

Investigators found that the creature was dead for at least three days before it arrived on the shore and its blood had turned the surrounding water red, the Jakarta Globe reported.

In February this year, a giant white hairy blob surfaced on a beach in the Philippines.

According to the Smithsonian National Museum of Natural History, the giant squid has an estimated maximum length of thirteen meters, almost ten meters shy of the animal that was found in Indonesia.

On closer inspection, however, Watkins and his fellow crew came to the conclusion they had come across the gas-filled corpse of a whale.

There had been previous sightings of sea cows in the region, she said.
