Elon Musk Is Dead Serious About Building a Freeway Under Los Angeles

It shows a test run of an electric sled that would swiftly move cars through the tunnels at 125 miles per hour (200 km/h), automatically shifting from one tunnel to another. Soon you might be able to get from Westwood to LAX in about six minutes with the help of Elon Musk's electric sled. He didn't share any info on when we might expect the tunnel to be complete - but we do know the plan is to expand the network to the greater Los Angeles area.

The entrepreneur posted Friday several pictures of equipment meant for digging tunnels beneath Los Angeles. Musk told Wiredinduced demand becomes irrelevant because he's thinking of building tunnels "going 10, 20, 30 layers deep (or more)".

He tweeted on May 4 that he couldn't decide on a name for his tunnel-boring machine. His caption for the video on Instagram cautions "Warning, this may cause motion sickness or seizures". CNET editor Dan Ackerman joins CBSN to discuss Elon Musk's newest ambitions in the tech world. Musk hopes that with their engineering know-how, The Boring Company can see a breakthrough of one mile per week.

"Full length of first tunnel will run from LAX to Culver City, Santa Monica, Westwood, and Sherman Oaks", Musk wrote.

Musk first showed a visualization of how the tunnel system could work in an April TED Talk.

These clips don't guarantee the tunnels will turn out exactly how Musk has described - the Boring Company still has a long way to go.

Below is a picture of boring machine segments that are being lowered into the starter tunnel at SpaceX.

Musk would need to obtain permits from Los Angeles to build tunnels under the city.

But transportation engineers have doubts about the feasibility of Musk's tunnel vision, and apart from benefiting the tunnel users, how much it would reduce traffic and improve transit overall.
