Most popular baby names of 2016

On the girls list, Caitlyn took a nose dive, dropping off the top 1000 list from 598 the year before. It also reveals which names dropped in popularity.

For boys, it was Liam, William, Mason, James, Benjamin, Jacob, Michael, Elijah and Ethan.

Emma was the top baby name for girls for the third year in a row last year.

The popularity of the name Caitlyn plummeted more than any other baby name.

The Social Security Administration is able to share the ranking because parents provide children's names when they apply for Social Security cards. Elijah is new on the list (it was 11th last year) replacing Alexander (which is now at 11).

Pop culture often influences the names that increase and decrease in popularity, and it happened again 2016.

The 2016 election didn't seem to have an impact on the list: There were no major changes in rankings of the names Donald or Hillary.

Names enjoying the biggest surge in popularity were Kylo, Creed, Benicio, Adonis and Fox for boys and Kehlani, Royalty, Saoirse, Ophelia and Aitana for girls. The shorter the bar, the less popular the name.

For girls, the name Kehlani jumped from 3,359 in 2015 to 872 in 2016. For girls, it was Kehlani, as in Kehlani Parrish, a singer and songwriter nominated for a Grammy in 2016. Debuting in the top 1000 at 901 is Kylo, as in Kylo Ren.

After the "Star Wars" movie was released, Wattenberg said she asked a focus group of people who had seen the movie whether any of the character names would become popular.

Although the name Donald is apparently growing in dislike among parents, the name Hillary didn't even make it on the Social Security Administration most recent list, which was released Friday.
