Chinese fighter flies inverted over US Air Force jet

"The interaction was considered unprofessional due to the manoeuvres of the Chinese pilots and the speed", Lieutenant Colonel Lori Hodge, spokeswoman for Pacific Air Forces Command in Honolulu, told Bloomberg.

Hong Kong: Two Chinese fighter jets came within 150 feet of a US Air Force plane while flying over the Yellow Sea, CNN reported, citing an unidentified US official.

A plane based at Offutt Air Force Base near Bellevue was involved in what US officials are calling an "unprofessional" intercept by two Chinese fighter jets over the Yellow Sea on Wednesday.

Officials said the matter was being addressed with China through "appropriate diplomatic channels".

However, this is not the first encounter of the U.S. with China. At that time the USA called the incident unsafe.

China is deeply suspicious of any USA military activity in the resource-rich South China Sea, parts of which are disputed by China and its smaller neighbors including the Philippines, Vietnam and Malaysia.

She noted that the WC-135 was on a routine mission at the time of the alleged intercept and was operating within worldwide airspace, Reuters reported.

"It's hard for China to tell whether the surveillance was targeting North Korea or China's military deployment", he added, comparing it to American mistrust about China's island building in the South China Sea, which Beijing insists is for civilian use.

Mid-air interceptions occur routinely in global airspace, but the United States military will often call out foreign pilots if it judges the maneuvers to be risky or unprofessional.

Close encounters between US and Chinese planes are relatively rare.

The incident over the East Chine Sea would not have been out of place in a re-make of Top Gun, where Tom Cruise's character Maverick's wild streak sees him carry out similar stunts.

The U.S. military did not say whether the encounter was unsafe, but the crew of the aircraft reportedly called the interception "unprofessional".
