The Boston Celtics won the first overall pick in the draft lottery on Tuesday but may not get an up close look at the 19-year-old guard. "It's a good time to be a Celtics fan".
The whole situation stems from a 2013 trade in which the Celtics sent Pierce, Garnett, and Jason Terry to Brooklyn as the Nets tried to build a star-packed team to rival the Miami Heat.
Boston acquired the Nets' 2014, 2016 and 2018 first-round picks in the deal. Worst case scenario, the pick drops to no. 4, where the player chosen could still turn out to be just as good as the guy at no. 1. Hoping for a head to head workout.
"Getting the No. 1 pick is very fun".
Of course, the Celtics don't have to oblige.
Celtics President of Basketball Operations Danny Ainge met with the media after the lottery, and as expected he was in a great mood. The second-year point guard could likely be replaced by either Lonzo Ball or Markelle Fultz, the two highly touted floor generals that headline this year's draft class.
When asked after Tuesday night's NBA Draft Lottery in NY if he's looking for a contract extension this summer, Embiid made a face indicating he didn't like the question and declined to comment.
The first 10 picks could feature as many as five point guards being selected, dropping some of the premier big men to the next 10 and letting teams with serious needs in the frontcourt get their pick of some of the best frontcourt players.
"I think sitting here right now with the No. 1 pick in the draft, the answer is obviously yes [this shows the value of patience], and sitting in the Eastern Conference finals, the answer is obviously yes".
"We have plenty of time to decide what to do, but I would imagine we'll make the pick", Grousbeck said.
The team with the best odds has now won the lottery three straight years after a decade of that happening only once.
NBA Deputy Commissioner Mark Tatum, left, watches as Boston Celtics co-owner Wyc Grousbeck, right, reacts after the learning the Celtics had won the first pick in the NBA basketball draft, at the draft lottery Tuesday, May 16, 2017, in NY.
All is not lost, as the Philadelphia 76ers now own the third overall pick in the 2017 NBA Draft.
"It's the mindset you have to have when you go on the road, for Game 1", James said. "We got fourth and personally, I'm good with it", McDonough added. We're looking for the best player at this point to fill what we need. In the 2015 NBA Draft, they selected Jahill Okafor with the third overall pick.
